How Long Will I Be Swollen from Fat Transfer?

Patient Question: I’m on day 6 after having a fat transfer to my buttocks area and I’m not sure how swollen I am. I’m hoping that I’m still quite swollen, because my butt is too big. I’m also quite bruised. How much longer before I look presentable? I understand that all of the swelling will take weeks to resolve, but I just want to know when I’ll look good. Thanks!

This is the most common question asked and the hardest to answer.  The reason for that is that everyone heals differently.  We could do the exact same procedure with the exact same technique on ten different patients and have each one of them respond differently.  One week after fat transfer is absolutely normal to have some bruising, swelling, tenderness and firmness.  That being said, most people after two weeks see the swelling and the firmness resolve. It takes time for the fat transfer to settle down and for the inflammation (that causes the swelling) to subside.

Bottom line: be patient – your observations seem quite normal!

Remember to always call your doctor if you have any concerns or feel anything out of the ordinary.
